Buying Happiness Around the World: 10 Things if Youโre Thinking of Working in Paradise
Oct 26, 2024Are you thinking of living and working abroad? For many of us, the choice to work internationally stems from the belief that travelling will enrich our lives. Our insatiable desire for adventure drives us to seek out our version of paradise.
However, the concept of paradise conjures different images for different people. For some, it represents the serene countryside in Georgia, while for others, it might be the quaint charm of Valencia, Italy. Bali and Thailand remain popular choices among digital nomads.
If you are considering living and working abroad, you likely have a dream destination in mind. Keep in mind that while your ideal location may be an excellent vacation spot, it may not necessarily be the best place to work.
What Annoys You?
Inefficiency? Noise? Crowds, traffic jams, or snow? Jot down what you’d like to avoid. Now that you have some ideas, consider the following factors when contemplating a move:
1. Reliable Internet Services
Most work today requires internet access. If you're a digital nomad running an online business, fast and reliable internet is essential. No matter how beautiful a location may be, don’t settle there if the internet connection is poor—visit instead.
2. Residency Requirements
Are you planning to live in your new location full-time or part-time? If considering a long-term move, familiarize yourself with the legal residency requirements. Many countries now offer special visas for digital nomads.
3. Your Free Time
How do you envision spending your leisure time? Are you drawn to outdoor activities like sailing and hiking, or do you prefer the arts—gallery openings, live theatre, fine dining, or salsa dancing?
4. Infrastructure
Consider the importance of reliable infrastructure. Access to good roads, public transportation, banks, and cable TV can significantly impact your quality of life.
5. The Weather
Not everyone thrives in sunny climates. Think about what you prefer—year-round sunshine, all four seasons, or perhaps a temperate climate. Consider how humidity affects your comfort as well.
6. Health Care
Access to quality and affordable health care is a critical, yet often overlooked, factor for digital nomads. If you have existing health conditions, ensure you're within a reasonable distance from medical facilities and have adequate health insurance.
7. Business Climate
If you’re planning to launch more than just an online business, research the local business climate. Understand the regulations, industry standards, and labour costs in the area.
8. Community
Would you prefer living in a place with a significant expatriate community, or are you open to integrating with locals? Perhaps your goal is to immerse yourself in a new culture.
9. Language
Do you prefer moving to a place where locals speak your language fluently, or does the challenge of learning a new language excite you?
10. Costs
If you’re self-employed, consider living costs, especially if you’re launching a business with limited savings.
Bringing It All Together
Living and working abroad can be thrilling. Eight years ago, I decided to pursue living abroad while working part of the time. I prioritized a good internet connection, warmth, community, and proximity to the beach.
After exploring various countries, I fell in love with the Mediterranean, particularly Greece. It offers an incredible lifestyle and easy travel throughout Europe. I cherish the warmth of both the climate and its people. Upon meeting Brenda we have chosen to make Victoria Canada our base while still living in the Mediterranean for part of the year. For us, both places are our idea of living in Paradise!
